Al Baqarah, 08-10: Face-off with two-faced.

He says he’s with you. He isn’t. He says what he does not do. He lies. He’s two-faced- a double crosser with double-standards. He dons a totally different facade when with a particular group, but shows his true self when he’s with his kind. All he cares about is his benefits and stoops this low.

Does this persona appeal to you? Probably not. Allah (swt) has a similar point to put across.

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَا هُمْ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ {8}يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ {9}فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ{10}

And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: “We believe in Allâh and the Last Day” while in fact they believe not.
They (think to) deceive Allâh and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!
In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allâh has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. [02:08-10]

Now Allah warns us of the third category of Mankind: the Hypocrites.

Hypocrites are of two types. And it’s very important to understand that. [Click here for this important briefing]
We will be discussing the first kind here in these verses. They are those who pretend to believe in Allah and Islam, but their hearts do not contain even an iota of iman.

And why is that? Allah (swt) answers this question: In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allâh has increased their disease…meaning, they are so caught up in the apparent attraction of this world that they find it hard to let go. They find it hard to grow out of their lavish lifestyle and big egos to embrace Islam willingly, because with faith comes sacrifice. So these people give a skeptical response every time they hear the message of Allah and they’re dubious about the Hereafter, judgment day and pretty much everything that the Messenger of Allah used to convey. And this is why Allah (swt) increases them in their disease of hypocrisy ’cause they’ve already made up their minds not to accept the truth, but to cross their fingers and say, “Count us in. We are with you.” And they think they’ve successfully deceived the believers and Allah and have secured their Hereafter and the present life by being two-faced, but in fact they’ve signed up for a painful torment.

So people, the bottom line is that the Quran is here with its guiding light but whether people will find their way or remain in the dark, depends on their attitude. It is the state of heart which differentiates between the believers and the disbelievers and the hypocrites…… but what about me? Where do I stand? For most of us the problem is that we believe in Allah and the hereafter but we fail to act accordingly. This is because we assume that we have faith but in reality our knowledge is not complete and thus our belief is not strong. And this is another good reason why we need to understand the Qur’an. 🙂

More verses would be coming up next on these hypocrites. Till then, let’s step up and expel all the doubts we have related to the Divine Commandments. Whenever any sort of order from the Quran and the Sunnah cross your way, just accept it hands down- like it or not. If it’s difficult to carry out, then pray to Allah (swt) to make it easier for you, instead of picking out flaws in the statement itself (this is what most of us usually do). Remember surah Al-Fatihah? Stick to it. Believe me, you’ll see the right way through. 🙂
